EL PASO, Texas — El Paso city leaders will take up a proposal Tuesday, Nov. 10, that would put a new name on a section of Bob Mitchell Drive to honor Fred Loya Sr., an East Side figure who built a business here and backed civic causes. He died in February.

The item appears as No. 26 on the council calendar. If approved, that roadway would become Fred Loya Drive. The segment under review starts where the street meets Montwood Drive and continues to the Paseo del Rey Drive intersection, close to Montwood High School on the city’s east side.

On Oct. 22, the City Plan Commission backed the honor in a unanimous vote and forwarded it for council consideration. Members are slated to talk through the resolution that day and may decide whether to adopt it.

The filed measure asks the council both to discuss and to act on swapping the present street name for Loya’s along that east-side stretch. The renamed section would cover only the portion between those two cross streets, not the entire length of Bob Mitchell Drive.

People who follow city business can watch the Nov. 10 session to see whether the honorary name is approved. The high school sits nearby, and the change would apply on the east side of town rather than across every block that now carries the Bob Mitchell name.

The council’s task on Tuesday is to decide whether Loya’s name should go on that stretch of roadway, after the planning panel’s unanimous October vote sent the idea forward as agenda item 26. The posted file describes a resolution that would swap the current name for Fred Loya Drive on that segment.
