# El Paso Government Impact

*Source: [HERE El Paso](https://www.hereelpaso.com/government-impact-el-paso-tx/) — July 26, 2026 by *

**Is government helping or hurting El Paso business?** We grade every El Paso-relevant policy, regulation, election, court ruling, and government action with one question in mind: what does it actually do to local employers, workers, and communities? Each item below is tagged **HELPING**, **HURTING**, or **WATCH** based on its concrete effect on El Paso employers, workers, and neighborhoods.

Stories that cannot be tied to a named El Paso-area employer, elected official, agency, or municipality are dropped. We do not grade celebrity politics or foreign affairs unless they touch a local employer or a local household budget.

## How we grade

- **HELPING** — Tax credits, grants, training funds, infrastructure investment, expansion announcements, regulatory relief, hiring incentives.

- **HURTING** — New tariffs, tax increases, layoffs, plant closures, compliance costs, lawsuits, restrictive regulations, shutdowns.

- **WATCH** — Mixed signals, pending decisions, or actions whose direction depends on implementation.

## What we use to judge impact

We track El Paso city government and its council, county government where one serves the city, the state’s governor, attorney general and legislature, and the U.S. senators and House members who represent the city, plus the neighboring municipalities whose decisions spill over into El Paso. Officeholders are named on this page only after each one is checked against official election and government sources for this city and state. When a federal or state action shows up in the news, we ask: does it land on a payroll, business or household in El Paso? If yes, we grade it.

*This page updates automatically as our newsroom publishes politics and policy stories. If a story doesn’t show up here, it didn’t pass the local-relevance bar — meaning it didn’t tie back to a named El Paso employer, elected official, or municipality. That is by design.*
