EL PASO, Texas — At least one person died Sunday, Nov. 1, after two vehicles collided on Socorro Road in El Paso County, and a section of the road was shut down for hours while deputies worked the scene.
Sheriff’s officials in El Paso County placed the wreck in the 11900 block, east of Thompson Road. The agency’s Special Traffic Investigators took charge of the case.
San Elizario Fire Rescue said the closure started near where Thompson Road meets Socorro Road. Officials warned that the stretch would stay blocked for an extended period and asked drivers to steer clear, use other routes and plan for delays.
Deputies with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office reported the fatality, and no timeline was given Sunday for when the road would reopen. The office has not released the names of anyone involved, how many people were hurt or what caused the vehicles to collide. Investigators said more details will come out as the case moves forward.
Both vehicles were badly damaged in the collision. Apart from the person who died, no one else was taken to a hospital.
It was not the first deadly crash on that road this week. Six days earlier, on Oct. 28, a motorcyclist, 19, was killed around 3:30 a.m. when he struck the back of a pickup in the 9800 block of the road. Speed was a factor in that crash, and both lanes at Vallarta Drive were blocked until about 10:30 a.m.
That Oct. 28 death was the 56th traffic fatality in El Paso in 2026, even with the count at the same point last year. Socorro Road has a history of deadly crashes, including a motorcycle wreck in its 11100 block in June 2025.
