Municipal Court Week in El Paso Wraps With Friday Safety Event

EL PASO, Texas — El Paso Municipal Court is opening its doors to residents this week with free events that run through Friday, part of a statewide observance meant to explain what city courts do and how people can get help with tickets.

Under Texas law, Municipal Courts Week falls each year during the first full week in November, with a focus on public education, traffic safety and the everyday work of the courts. In El Paso the court handles Class C misdemeanors and civil parking tickets written inside city limits, and appeals go to the Municipal Court of Appeals.

Court staff say they can walk people through traffic and parking citations and explain their options, which include payment plans and community service for some Class C cases.

The week opened Monday with a kickoff and giveaways at the court, followed on Tuesday by a children’s story time at the Richard Burges Library and another at the Main Public Library downtown on Wednesday, along with sessions on Teen Court and Juvenile Case Management.

On Thursday, a Workforce Borderplex event is set for the main court building at 810 E. Overland Ave. Friday brings the finale, a public safety gathering with El Paso police and firefighters. It runs 10 a.m. until noon, and the site is the Upper East Regional Command Center. That center is at 14301 Pebble Hills Blvd.

Animal Services, Code Enforcement, the Texas Department of Transportation and other agencies are also joining in during the week. Court leaders said the goal is a relaxed setting where residents can ask questions and learn how the process works.
